Can you believe it’s almost the end of the semester?

Well we have made it to the end of November and we’re nearly to the end of the first semester. Everyone has made great strides thus far and we’re all hoping for even more growth in the second semester! We had our first official Special Olympics event recently and all of the students had a great time bowling. All of the students in my class placed well in their individual bowling category and we even had first and second place winners! Way to go guys. We are very proud of all of my student athletes.

December is a short month for us here at Walter J. as we have our annual winter break in just three weeks time (there is no school from December 19th through December 30th). We have a lot to study and learn, but I know we can do it. Recently each student was issued their very own laptop to do their school work in a more efficient and much more entertaining manner. This simple gesture has re-invigorated the students and they have really taken to their new technology. We are working on using the iWork suite and the students have decided that working on their machines is more fun than paper and pencil.

From having their own laptops to playing our Wii using our classroom projector (four foot tall Mario Kart is fun for us all) to using the interactive Dymo Mimio board, technology has been a great motivator for the boys. We also continue to explore the insides of our gadgets and the guys have gotten much better at putting their gadgets back together with all of the screws and parts that came out of them. My favorite part is for all their efforts, they are learning without knowing it. Way to go guys!

Special Olympics Information: Take Five

The following letter and forms were sent home today with your child AND another set was sent to your home via the very troubled US Postal Service. Please be on the lookout for these papers and please, please, please have them filled out by your doctor (or the doc at any of the local clinics). After you and the doctor have completed these forms please send them back in to school on or before Friday, September 23rd.

Thanks so much.

Good day from Walter J. We wanted to let you know that we will be participating in Special Olympics again this year and each student needs a current physical and a parent permission form on file in order for each student to participate. There will be additional permission forms for each individual event and those forms will include all the information for that particular field trip.

We are currently scheduled to go bowling on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 to get two preliminary scores for the Special Olympics Bowling Tournament this fall. Permission forms for that will be sent home soon. In the meantime Special Olympics requires that the two forms enclosed with this letter be on file BEFORE your child can participate in any events, preliminary or otherwise.

Please find enclosed two forms for the Special Olympics. These are the Special Olympics Athlete Health Information Form (this form MUST be filled out by a doctor) and the Official Special Olympics Release Form (this one is the parental permission form, please complete the bottom portion for your minor child). Mr. Burger and I need both of these forms filled out and returned to us at Walter J. before Friday, September 23, 2011. Again, without both of these forms on file by the 23rd your child may not attend any of the field trips we will be attending during this school year, and we really would like to have this be a fun, unifying event for our class.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Mr. Burger or I at WJB. We may not be available when you call, but one of us will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you very much and we look forward to a year full of fun, friendly competition!

Writing Letters Home and Abroad!

Every week my class and I write letters home. We do this not just to meet TN standards, but to practice positive communication skills between teens and parents, which we all know are often strained. If you get a letter from one of my students PLEASE write back to us and address the envelope like this:

YOUR STUDENT’S NAME

C/O MR. LOVE

WALTER J. BAIRD MIDDLE SCHOOL

131 WJB PRIDE LANE

LEBANON TN 37087

Yes I know how that looks, but the post office prefers that addresses be written in all capital letters with no punctuation if it’s not necessary.

When you write back your student gets extra credit points added to his or her Language Arts grade. I offer many extra credit opportunities. If you’d like to know more or have an idea to help the students learn more about their community please… write me a letter!

Proud to be a Blue Devil

After many years of teaching I am finally taking the plunge into the world of coaching. After much laughter I accepted the position of assistant soccer coach under the fine supervision of Head Coach Meyer. If you’d like to see a new team coming together please feel free to come out to support our Blue Devil Soccer team. See you on the pitch!

One Team, One Goal, Blue Devil Soul!

Just a little bit about Mr. Love

Welcome to Mr. Love’s homepage. I proudly serve as the Comprehensive Development Program teacher at Walter J. Baird Middle School. I would like to thank the WJB faculty and staff for the positive atmosphere. I would especially like to recognize the kindness and support of Mrs. Sampson and the rest of the WJB administration.
I began teaching in Tennessee in the Fall of 2000. I have taught a variety of classes with a concentration on facilitating positive behavior and academic success in children outside of the educational mainstream. I enjoy my loving family, playing music, reading books of all kinds, collecting and sharing picture books, and cooking. If you ever need a great chocolate creme pie I might surprise you, but I won’t give you my recipe!

Welcome, Welcome, Welcome

Thank you for visiting Mr. Love’s web page. The 2011-12 School year is
under way and we’re all very excited about all the new changes at WJB.

With our new TN state standards we will continue working vigorously to improve
our core of academic knowledge. If you have any questions, comments, concerns,
observations, aggravations, or literary criticisms please feel free to contact
me here at school via phone (615) 444-2190.

Thanks again for stopping by.
