BDP Rewards: A New Behavior System

Walter J. Baird Middle School is excited to introduce BDP Rewards, a new positive behavior recognition system launching in the 2025–2026 school year. This system replaces the previous PBIS points system and is designed to strengthen school culture, recognize positive behavior, and motivate students to strive for excellence.

Why BDP Rewards?

The BDP Rewards System was created to better support students and staff while promoting a consistent, positive school-wide culture. Key benefits include:

An acknowledgment system that promotes a positive school climate
Recognition for students who meet or exceed Tier I expectations
Encouragement of cooperation and positive peer interactions
Healthy competition that motivates students to strive for “better”
Support for approximately 80–85% of the student population through Tier I practices
Empowerment of staff to positively influence student behavior using an existing, cohesive system
A shared vision and consistent expectations across the school
Timely and manageable monitoring of rewards and celebrations

What Is BDP?

BDP is a Tier I behavior system that focuses on clear, consistent expectations for all students.

BDP stands for:

Be Ready
Display Respect
Practice Responsibility

Types of Rewards

BDP Rewards are offered at three levels:

School-Wide Rewards

School-wide rewards occur at 4.5 weeks and 9 weeks each quarter.

Eligibility

All students are eligible unless they are disqualified based on the criteria below:

4.5 Weeks: 2 direct office referrals and 2 unexcused absences
9 Weeks: 3 direct office referrals and 3 unexcused absences

Reward Types

4.5 Weeks: Fun activity during Related Arts (4 times per year)
9 Weeks: End-of-quarter teacher vs. student competition with concessions

Students who do not qualify will attend study hall.

Quarter 1

September 3: 4.5 Weeks – Fun activity in Related Arts
October 2: 9 Weeks – Teachers vs. Students Volleyball

Quarter 2

November 21: 4.5 Weeks – Fun activity in Related Arts
December 18: 9 Weeks – Teachers vs. Students Basketball

Quarter 3

February 6: 4.5 Weeks – Fun activity in Related Arts
March 6: 9 Weeks – Fun Activity during 5th period

Quarter 4

April 30: 4.5 Weeks – Fun activity in Related Arts
May 20: 9 Weeks – Field Day (activity TBD)

Individual Rewards

BDP Bucks

BDP Bucks are used to recognize students who demonstrate “above and beyond” behavior.

What Counts as “Above & Beyond”?

Behaviors that are not expected and promote a positive school culture. Examples include:

Voluntarily partnering with a peer who is usually not chosen
Picking up trash that is not their own
Going out of one’s way to help others or otherwise promote a positive school culture

What Is NOT “Above & Beyond”?

The following are expected behaviors and are not eligible for BDP Bucks:

Turning in work on time
Having required supplies
Following hallway and cafeteria expectations
Arriving to class on time

Tier II behaviors have their own separate reward and incentive system.

How BDP Bucks Work

Teachers award BDP Bucks for above and beyond behavior (not expected behavior).
The student and teacher write their names on the BDP Buck.
Students place their earned BDP Bucks in the box located in their grade-level pod.
Every Friday, BDP Bucks from each pod are entered into a drawing for prizes.
After the drawing, all BDP Bucks are added to the grade-level class tube to help earn grade-level rewards.

BDP Bucks Prize Drawing

Each Friday during announcements:

All BDP Bucks earned that week are entered into a drawing.
If a student’s BDP Buck is drawn, they choose a prize from the student choice board.
The teacher who awarded the BDP Buck also receives a prize and chooses from the teacher choice board.

Grade-Level Rewards

BDP Bucks also contribute to grade-level incentives:

Each grade level has its own class tube. Each week, BDP Bucks are added to the class tube after the individual prize drawing. When a tube is filled with BDP Bucks, the entire grade earns a reward. Tubes can be filled multiple times throughout the year, allowing grades to earn multiple rewards.

1st Goal: Popsicle reward
2nd Goal: Pajama Day & Donuts
3rd Goal: TBD

Upcoming Grade-Level Rewards:

7th Grade filled their entire tube and won a popsicle social! (2/6)
