School Dress Code Policy

To help create the best, safest learning environment, expectations for student dress have been established. Guidelines are in place to reduce the likelihood of distraction or disruption to the daily academic focus and operations of the school. The elementary schools develop individual dress codes for their Pre-kindergarten through Fifth grade students.

The uniform dress policy for Walter J. Baird and Winfree Bryant Middle Schools, and their respective system-provided school transportation, is as follows:

For all Clothing:

  • Undergarments must not be showing at any time
  • No pajamas or sleepwear allowed
  • No hats or headwear allowed (except for those with prior approval for religious or
  • medical reasons)
  • Appropriate graphics only allowed - Graphics must NOT be offensive, political, vulgar or gang related.  Graphics depicting tobacco, drug, alcohol, weapons, or any illegal content will not be allowed. (Principal’s discretion)

Pants/Bottoms:

  • Must be worn at the waist
  • No sagging
  • Length (to include shorts, skirts, dresses, etc.) must be at least fingertip level when standing
  • Tights, leggings, yoga, or any other spandex pants must be worn with a top, shirt,  sweater which is fingertip length when standing

Shirts/Tops:

  • No plunging or revealing necklines (Principal’s discretion)
  • No sleeveless
  • No midriffs - No skin to be showing between shirts/tops and pants/bottoms at any time
  • Hoodies permissible – hoods cannot be worn during the school day

Coats:

  • May be worn to school
  • Full length and oversized coats to be removed and placed in lockers or designated areas

Shoes:

  • Appropriate shoes are required (no house shoes, slippers or flip-flops)
  • All shoes must have a hard sole bottom
  • Tennis shoes required for P.E.

The school administration shall determine whether the student’s attire/appearance meets dress code guidelines and is within the limits of decency and modesty, is supportive of and not disruptive to a positive learning climate, and/or promotes a safe school environment.

When a student’s clothing does not meet the requirements of the dress code and/or principal discretion, the student will be required to:

  • Change attire if the student has a change of clothing
  • Call someone to drop off dress code compliant clothing in a timely matter to allow for a change
  • Change attire into clothing provided by the school

Repeat dress code infractions may result in appropriate disciplinary consequences as administered by a school administrator.
